BEHIND THE DESIGN: MAGIC KINGDOM GIRLS BEDROOM

YES, WE DO KIDS ROOM

Parents ask me all the time if I design kids bedrooms. I absolutely love kids spaces, in fact, I used to own a children's boutique in La Jolla called Posies that specialized in children's clothing and home decor. I designed vintage inspired clothing and furniture designed and fabricated by me. That's how I got my start in interior design.

DADDY'S LITTLE PRINCESS

There is nothing more magical and heart-warming than watching an adoring daddy with his little princess! A huge shout out to this single dad for wanting to hand his daughter the keys to the magic kingdom.

THE DESIGN CHALLENGE

It's always a little challenging to work with a clients existing furnishings and make a huge impact on a room. This little girl is only four years old and already had a room full of quality furniture. When I walked in and saw that she loved Mickey and Minnie, the words Magic Kingdom popped into my head. Being a mother of two, my design philosophy when it comes to children's bedrooms is to design a room that they can grow into. I always incorporate what they love now but I'm also thinking ahead so rather than going the total Disney route I chose to use the Magic Kingdom as my guiding light. Here's what happens when you wish upon a star....

THE DESIGNER'S PUNCH LIST

- Incorporate a version of Cinderella's Castle

- Rework the furniture layout

- Make the chandelier with it's black shade feel intentional

- New bedding

- New nightstands

- Sprinkle Fairy Dust all over this room!

HOW I MADE IT HAPPEN

The first order of business was to bring in a large castle mural into the space. Sounds easy enough, right? The mural that you see before you is actually the SECOND mural that I had installed in this space. The first one turned out way too saturated and bright. I went through hundreds of castle images to pick out just the right one. This castle image was perfect but was originally shot in the evening so I had to play with the exposure and saturation to make it look like it does now. I was so nervous since the first one had been so off but once it was installed, it was absolutely perfect. Phew, another crisis averted.

INCORPORATING LIGHTING

One of the design elements that I had to consider was the large chandelier that my client had installed in the room. It has a large black shade and colorful crystals so I had to make it look intentional and composed.

FURNITURE PLACEMENT

I didn't want to place the bed in front of the feature mural so I played with the furniture placement and moved the bed in front of the window. An ethereal canopy with white sheers trimmed with lavender pom pom fringe a must have for this little princess.

LILAC BEDDING

I purchased the sweetest lilac bedding with puckers, pleats and large rosettes then I layered on the pillows! I added in touches of Disney throughout but my favorite pieces are the nightstands with the embossed Mickey and Minnie door fronts.

THE FINAL REVEAL

I'm thrilled with how this space turned out but more importantly, my young client loves her new space!
