BEHIND THE DESIGN: FROM BORING TO BOHEMIAN BONUS ROOM

This is NOT your grandma's bonus room! Well, in this case it just might be! My client, a legal professional and grandmother, contacted me to help her redesign a small bonus room right off of the entrance of her home. This is a repeat client that lives out of state - we've already redesigned her living room, dining room and master bedroom. When she asked me to help her with this bonus room, my first question was, "how does this room need to function for you now"?

THE DESIGN BRIEF

My client let me know that she would like to use this space to lounge with her grandchildren (melt my heart). She wanted this space to have a relaxed bohemian vibe, incorporate the colors green and yellow as well as some meaningful pieces of artwork and furniture.

Every designer is different, I am one of those designers that absolutely LOVES incorporating some of my clients existing pieces. I think that they are important to a home and help give a space provenance and takes a the design process on a journey that wouldn't have happened had we started with just a blank canvas. The end result is always so much more personal in my opinion.

There was an old school plaid sofa in the room that my client asked me to incorporate. It was given to her by her sweet grandmother but I could not find the intersection of the vibe that she wanted for the new space and her grandmothers plaid sofa, so we decided to replace it.

COLOR AND INSPIRATION BOARD

THE COLOR CONCEPT

Green and yellow were colors that came up in our initial discovery call about the space, in fact, she mentioned that she was obsessed with green velvet....amen sister! I came up with a custom color scheme for her space that is warm, cozy and earthy, the perfect color palette to create a relaxed bohemian room.

ROOM CONCEPT BOARD

THE DESIGN SOLUTION

In my mind, a day bed was a must for cuddling and reading with the grandkids in this space. I found a fabulous wood carved daybed from Anthropologie with a green velvet cushion to anchor the space. Using my inspiration board as my field guide, I stuck to the plan and found furnishings and accessories in the color scheme that I had selected. My client was thrilled with the design concept and is in the process of purchasing all of the elements that I specified and then pulling the whole look together. I'm looking forward to seeing the finished look!
