BEFORE & AFTER: EASY BREEZY BEACH-STYLE BATHROOM MAKEOVER

We decided to give this home that vacation vibe all year round with a beachy keen bathroom makeover.

I love working with this client, she adores every shade of the color blue as well as all things beachy and art. We incorporated all of those elements into this easy breezy bathroom makeover.

First, let me throw it back so that you can see what this space looked like when I arrived on scene. It was very dated and I'm pretty sure that it had 1980's contact paper stuck onto the walls.

THE DESIGN CONCEPT

It all started with pebbles! We wanted to bring the feeling of the shoreline to this space with smooth pebbled tile. We fell in love with the variations of cream, gray and of course those gorgeous blues!

THE VIBE BOARD

Here is a look at my Design Concept Board. I use boards like this to a) validate the ideas that are swimming around in my head and b) to make sure that all of the surface selections like the paint, tile, countertop material, metals and textiles will work well together in the space. This is a "working" document that I am constantly updating as the project progresses. Especially now, there are a lot of items that are unavailable and have to be reselected. This Design Concept Board keeps me on track and is a way for me to Visually Communicate with the client and the contractor.

The plan in this space was to do an art installation on the vanity wall. We really wanted it to be a bold focal point so we commissioned local Artist, Cassandra Schramm of Accents by Cassandra to assist.

KELP-INSPIRED HAND PAINTED DETAIL

We had the contractor install the pebble backsplash in the organic way that it came meshed onto the backing. We loved the organic movement of curves. I also had the wall behind the vanity and the ceiling painted a deep sea blue. My brain works in mysterious ways but as I stood there, I imagined tendrils of sea kelp floating up the wall like it would from the ocean floor.

That's when I brought Cassandra. On our initial onsite consultation, she totally understood my vision and in her mind's eye she saw the tendrils floating and curling up the wall and even onto the ceiling. THIS is why I LOVE collaborating with artists, they can take your vision and step it up a notch!

CUSTOM ROMAN SHADE

This bathroom has a door with a window that goes out to the patio. For privacy, I specified a custom roman shade. I selected a fabric with a pattern that has a similar vibe as the art installation on the focal wall. It reminded me of bubbles or the way sea kelp gracefully lies on the sand.

MAXIMALIST PEBBLED SHOWER

Here's what the shower looked like before...

Pebbles aren't just meant for the beach. We went maximalist with floor-to-ceiling pebbled tile on the shower surround. It is such a WOW moment!

TOUCHES OF TEAK

When working with a lot of cool colors like blues and grey it's essential to add in a warm tone and texture like teak.

COASTAL CHIC BRASS ACCENTS

Brass is the unofficial metallic of coastal style, thanks to its use in yachts and boats. I used this maritime metal as an accent throughout this space and I always think that it's warm tone looks fabulous against blue.

BEACHY PENNY ROUNDS

I specified a beautiful penny round tile for the shower floor. This one, with all of its variations in tone reminded me of finding sand dollars on the beach. Don't you agree?

BATHROOM FLOORING

On the bathroom floor, I didn't want to install a "wood effect" tile but I still wanted a tile that had the movement, texture and vibe of sun-bleached wood that you would find at the beach.

EASY BREEZY DOES IT

This bathroom makeover project was all about bringing that easy breezy beach vibe home. I think we nailed it!
