No Shame In Your Home Decor Game

DO YOU LONG TO INVITE ALL OF YOUR FRIENDS OVER FOR FAB DINNER PARTIES BUT HAVE SHAME OVER THE WAY YOUR HOME LOOKS?

Dinner Party

If so, you are not alone.

I have many clients tell me how hard it was to muster up the courage to have a designer in their home. Typically, when I get to the door, they're not relaxed at all. In fact, they're sort of out of breathe from running around and tidying up before I pushed the doorbell. As I walk in they begin to apologize to me about their home, they don't know how they got to this place or maybe they do, either way they're ashamed.

From my experience, it's never as bad as they perceive it to be. Many times there has been a life event they've just been through and are just coming up for air after having the breathe knocked of them. Life events can range from a new baby that refuses to sleep to a recent loss of a loved one. I reassure them that I came to help and not to judge, it resonates, they relax.

RELEASE THE SHAME

This is what I know to be true. We can trust people with our mess. When someone invites me over to their home, I really enjoy seeing the story that's being told. I love pouring over collections and family photos. I love to see what kind of books they are reading, if they love music, grandma's quilt or a family heirloom. I especially love walking over toys on my way to kitchen to have a cup off coffee and some girl talk. I call it happy chaos. These are the homes that feel the best to me. Your home might not be perfect but your hospitality is all I need!

HERE ARE SOME THINGS YOU CAN DO TO UP YOUR HOME DECOR GAME...

  • Clean and declutter. Always.

  • Paint. It's inexpensive and makes everything look new and fresh.

  • Style your bookshelves. I like to pull off the dust jackets and arrange books by color. I also stack some for visual interest. Display small frames and accessories to really make them interesting.

  • Rehang your art. Your art should be at eye level. I'm short so a little above eye level for me. It should be hung so that someone that's 5' 2" like me looks slightly up and someone that's 6' 2" looks slightly down.

  • Call a professional. Visioning your space in a different way can be really difficult. I get it! When you've lived in a home that has looked a certain way for many years it's hard to imagine it any different. I equate it to trying to remember to lyrics to one song while another one is playing on the radio! Impossible, right? I can bring a fresh set of eyes and a new perspective to your home and you'll want to have people over all the time!
