When it comes to bathroom design, most people instinctively lean toward bright, neutral palettes. But at Rachel Moriarty Interiors, we believe that some spaces are meant to embrace their shadows—and that’s exactly what we did in this bold, theatrical bathroom transformation in Del Cerro, San Diego.

This lower-level guest bathroom had no windows and no natural light. Rather than fight the darkness, we leaned all the way in, allowing the moody energy of the space to drive our design decisions. The result? A showstopping bathroom that channels vintage showgirl glam with a modern, artistic twist.
Designed for my client-turned-friend, abstract artist Ann Golumbuk, this space is every bit as expressive and unapologetically bold as she is. Don’t let the “abstract artist” title fool you—Ann manages her projects like a boss! She brings her vision, her vibe, and that let-it-roll-off-a-duck’s-back energy when things go sideways, which makes the entire collaboration not just seamless, but straight-up pleasurable.

This behind-the-scenes photo captures a real moment from our process. Ann and I work very differently—I’m a visual thinker who lives in digital tools, and she’s the ultimate paper checklist queen. And honestly? I love that about us. Here we are, cross-referencing notes, double-checking every detail, and bringing that total dream team energy.
The Design Concept: Parisian Glamour Meets California Cool
This guest bathroom pulls its inspiration straight from the icon herself—Josephine Baker. Think 1920s Paris, feathers, flair, and a whole lot of attitude. She was bold, unapologetic, and completely unforgettable—exactly the energy we channeled into this space.

And if it’s also giving “Last Showgirl” with a splash of Pamela Anderson strutting through a velvet-curtained dressing room... you’re welcome. This bathroom doesn’t whisper; it performs. Interpret it how you want—this space was made to turn heads.

We set out to capture that same spirit in this space—evoking her theatricality and fearless glamour through intentional design choices that feel dramatic, layered, and full of personality.

We selected a feather-print wallpaper as the backdrop, instantly setting a sultry, theatrical tone. Rich teal hues wrap the room in depth and drama, while layered lighting creates seductive shadowplay and atmosphere. And because we never shy away from a bold move at Rachel Moriarty Interiors, we cranked up the energy with burnt orange accents—because that’s just how we roll.

The Artful Touch: A Collaboration with the Client
As always, collaboration was at the heart of this project. Ann Golumbuk is not only the homeowner but also an accomplished abstract artist. To incorporate her work into the space, we installed two of her white abstract pieces directly onto the deep-toned walls. The contrast is striking—art that glows against darkness, adding tension and balance in the best way.
This design isn't just a bathroom. It's a visual experience. A moment. A mood.

Before, During & After: Proof That Playing It Safe Is Overrated
Scroll down and witness the glow-up. What started as a functional bathroom is now serving full-on glamour and layered drama.
Every transformation has its messy middle—and we love that part just as much as the final reveal. Here’s a peek behind the scenes as the Showgirls Bathroom came to life, one bold decision at a time.
This transformation is your permission slip to go bold—especially in small spaces. Because let’s be real, safe is forgettable... and this bathroom? Anything but.
Maximalist Interiors in San Diego: Why They Work
We hear it all the time: “I want color... but I’m scared.” My friend, a bathroom is literally the best place to get over your fear. It’s small, it’s tucked away, and it’s begging for a little drama. When done right (read: intentionally and unapologetically), maximalist design doesn’t overwhelm—it envelops. It’s luxe, it’s layered, it’s a whole experience. And yes, it works—here in San Diego, and beyond.
A Signature Rachel Moriarty Interiors Moment
This project is the embodiment of what we do best at Rachel Moriarty Interiors—infusing every space with storytelling, intentional color, bold pattern, and deeply personal touches. From the feather-print wallpaper to the moody lighting and curated art, this powder room isn’t just functional—it’s unforgettable. We design rooms to be lived in, loved, and yes—sometimes even become the backdrop for iconic moments.

This photo, taken at the reveal party, features my designer besties piled into the space, and I am living for the energy.
It’s maximalism. It’s giving album cover vibes. It’s everything.
