One thing I can tell you about basements is that they are tricky to decorate. For one, the lighting isn't great and there are awkward angles not to mention the bulkheads. With careful planning it can be done. Here is a recent project I completed and the tips you can use to create the perfect basement bedroom.
CREATE THE PERFECT BASEMENT BEDROOM - GO WITH THE FLOW
Awkward angles, brick walls and niches make it seem impossible to create a room that's cohesive and flows when really these architectural elements can help your identify and create zones in this space so that it functions not just as a bedroom but more as a small studio space.
CREATE THE PERFECT BASEMENT BEDROOM - AN EPIC SLEEP ZONE
The main purpose of this space is sleep, so make sure that the bed the focal point of the room. In this space I flanked the small twin bed with two identical bookshelves to give it more visual impact. I layered the bed with a variety of textiles to add visual interest.
CREATE THE PERFECT BASEMENT BEDROOM - CUSTOM FABRIC ROMAN SHADES
Basements typically have windows that are completely different shapes. I created cohesion by designing custom roman shades for all of the windows in this space. I used a classic navy pinstripe men's suiting to elevate the space and add touch of sophistication.
CREATE THE PERFECT BASEMENT BEDROOM - SET UP A STUDY ZONE
Children at any age need careful planning to create places for study and play. Even if your child is years away from studying geometry, you can create a space that serves as a functional homework area and grows with him or her. This little niche was the perfect spot for a study zone.
CREATE THE PERFECT BASEMENT BEDROOM - PAINT THE WALLS
Benjamin Moore nailed it when they created Simply White. I used this color on both the walls and the ceiling of this basement bedroom to make it feel it bright and fresh.
CREATE THE PERFECT BASEMENT BEDROOM - UPDATE YOUR FURNITURE WITH PAINT
Sometimes you find an item on Craigslist or have existing pieces that could use a tiny bit of tweaking -- or even a full-fledged makeover! My client asked if we could update her childhood bedroom set to use in this space. I painted them a color called Federal Blue. I think the result will inspire you to try your hand at it. These pieces look so stately in this basement space.
CREATE THE PERFECT BASEMENT BEDROOM - GO VERTICAL DUDE
You can never have enough storage in a kids room - trust me, I'm speaking from experience! I installed shallow bookcases on either side of the bed along with extra storage bins to keep all of the small items organized.
