PROJECT REVEAL: CREATING AN ORGANIC MODERN SAUNA BATHROOM

I am constantly challenged to create spaces that reflect the personalities and lifestyles of my clients. Recently, I had the privilege of working on a sauna bathroom project in beachside community of Point Loma for wellness-minded couple with a keen eye for detail. I'm sharing the design elements that we chose, including the incorporation of a medical-grade infrared sauna, organic-inspired Spanish porcelain tiles, black slate-inspired tile flooring, black fixtures, and modern lighting, all of which came together to transform their bathroom into a serene wellness haven.

THE VISION

From the very beginning, my clients were determined to prioritize wellness and relaxation in their bathroom design. They wanted a serene sanctuary where they could escape the stresses of daily life and immerse themselves in a spa-like atmosphere. With this clear vision in mind, we set out to create a space that embodied both luxury and tranquility.

THE BEFORE

Documenting the design process is an essential part of my profession. Taking photos before the design project begins allows me to have a visual record of the original state of the space. This documentation is invaluable in reflecting on the progress made, because it serves as a reminder of the hard work, creativity, and dedication invested in each project. They are also a great way to share my work with you, so that you can see the incredible changes that can be achieved through thoughtful planning, creative design and the right team to implement the project.

THE CONCEPTUAL VIBE BOARD

Dreaming, scheming and conceptualizing ignites the initial spark that drives the creative process and paves the way for the whole design. As a designer, I believe that creating a vibe for a space at the beginning of any project is of utmost importance. Dreaming allows us to tap into our imagination and envision limitless possibilities before the realities like budget, timeline and space restrictions come into play. It's the foundation and honestly, I think it's the best part of the process! By establishing a Vibe or a Concept Board, we're creating a path for the project. It helps to see how all of the elements are going to feel together in the same space. My clients lean towards modern industrial style so the Vibe Board helped me test combinations of natural materials and textures with modern surfaces and colors to create what ultimately became our "Organic Modern Industrial Sauna Bathroom" project.

THE DESIGN PLAN

I cannot stress enough the significance of pre-planning and creating accurate floor plans to scale before embarking on any interior design project, particularly for something as intricate as a sauna bathroom. Pre-planning allows us to establish a clear roadmap for the project, ensuring that all design elements harmoniously fit together. By thoroughly analyzing the space and understanding its limitations, we can make informed decisions regarding the layout, functionality, and aesthetic appeal of the sauna bathroom. By investing time and effort in the beginning of the project, we can confidently move forward. Which takes right into Demo Day!

DEMO DAY!

Demo day is an exciting and crucial day that marks the beginning of the physical transformation of a space. This is the day when all the demolition work and removal of existing structures takes place. For me, demo day is the culmination of careful planning and design. It's the moment when the vision and concept for the space start to come to life.

I do a site visit right after the demo and clean up to address any unforeseen issues that may have come up. It's a super exciting time for everyone involved, including the client!

THE FOCAL POINT - MEDICAL GRADE INFRARED SAUNA

At the heart of this project lies the medical-grade infrared sauna. We selected this specific sauna to enhance the wellness journey for our clients. The infrared technology not only provides numerous health benefits but also adds a touch of modernity to the space. Placed strategically near the shower, it serves as the focal point of the bathroom, inviting the couple to enjoy the restorative and detoxifying benefits of a sauna whenever they desire.

ORGANIC-INSPIRED SPANISH PORCELAIN TILES

To create a seamless connection with nature, we opted for organic-inspired Spanish porcelain tiles. The earthy tones and textures of these tiles impart a warm and inviting ambiance that mimics the surrounding Californian landscape. The couple expressed their desire to bring nature indoors, and these beautiful tiles achieved just that.

BLACK SLATE INSPIRED TILE FLOORING

For the flooring, we chose black slate-inspired tiles to create contrast and add a touch of elegance. The dark flooring not only complements the organic-inspired tiles but also acts as a grounding element in the space. The resilient and water-resistant properties of slate ensure the longevity and durability of the flooring.

BLACK FIXTURES

Black fixtures were carefully selected to embrace the couple's contemporary aesthetic. The sleek black sink and toilet enhance the overall design, creating a stark contrast against the light-colored tiles. The fixtures not only add a touch of drama but also contribute to the sleek and modern appeal of the bathroom.

MODERN LIGHTING

To enhance the serene atmosphere, we chose modern lighting fixtures that emit a soft, warm glow.

Designing this sauna bathroom for my clients was an absolute pleasure. Collaborating with a wellness-minded couple allowed us to create a space that resonated with their aspirations for relaxation, rejuvenation, and detachment from the stresses of modern life. By incorporating a medical-grade infrared sauna, organic-inspired Spanish porcelain tiles, black slate-inspired tile flooring, black fixtures, and modern lighting, we transformed their bathroom into a true wellness haven.

Witnessing the transformative power of a thoughtfully designed space is truly gratifying. This sauna bathroom now serves as a sanctuary where they can escape, recharge, and embrace wellness on a daily basis.
